The definitive edition of Mortal Kombat 1 has been unexpectedly released, unifying the 2023 fighting game with around 144 euros in downloadable content. This new installment includes a total of 35 fighters, featuring characters like Quan Chi, Cyrax, Peacemaker, and T-1000, as well as story expansions and additional fighters. However, despite the appeal of the package, the gaming community seems to be dissatisfied with the implication that the content of MK1 has come to an end.
A version that promises to be what the game always should have been
The designation of Definitive Edition raises concerns, as it suggests that there will be no more content, especially after Ed Boon, director of NetherRealm, promised years of updates and expansions. Players have expressed their frustration on various platforms, including subreddits and Twitter, where the feeling that the game never reached its full potential in the 19 months since its release has been echoed.
Users lament that this sudden closure could have consequences for the future perception of NetherRealm’s releases. If Mortal Kombat 1 really comes to an end, players may become more cautious when committing to future games, especially after the promises of extended support.
Although many fans believe that the decision to close the content cycle may be more related to business requirements from Warner Bros. than a creative failure from the development team, the situation leaves a bittersweet taste. As players gather clips of Boon’s unfulfilled promises, the community faces a difficult reality, where “the era of MK1” may already be closing, leaving uncertainties about the future of the franchise.
