The “boom” of OpenAI with ChatGPT has led to artificial intelligence becoming the darling of major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta. This has also resulted in new AI-powered features appearing in the software we use daily, whether we want them or not. Fortunately, in most cases, you can disable them.
Google and Gemini
One of the latest Google’s innovations, AI Overviews, can be a great example of this. The company made this feature public mid-year, powered by Gemini, which directly addresses user queries on Google with AI-generated responses. As it is a recent technology, it is not without problems: tendency to “invent” information, plagiarism of websites, etc.
If you already have AI Overviews activated, you can use the new Web filter in the Search to continue with the Google experience you knew. To do this, you just need to click on the Web tab.
Microsoft and Copilot
If you are one of those who use Edge or Bing in your daily routine, you are probably already quite familiar with Copilot, Microsoft’s chatbot. Fortunately, avoiding its use is as simple as not clicking on the rainbow button that activates its features.
Still, you can also completely remove it from your view. Type edge://settings in the search bar and click on Sidebar > Show Copilot. Disable it so it doesn’t appear again.
Meta and Meta AI
In short, Meta does not allow us to disable its chatbot, Meta AI. The assistant, launched in September 2023, is based on its proprietary model LlaMA and you can write to it as if it were a real person, just like with ChatGPT. It is available through Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the website meta.ai.
For now, the countries of the European Union cannot use it. Even so, Meta plans to launch a text-only version of LlaMA 3 for the continent.
Apple and Apple Intelligence
At the end of October, macOS and iOS users will be able to enjoy Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI, on their devices. If you don’t want to hear about Apple Intelligence, it’s easy. Within Settings, you will find a section called Apple Intelligence and Siri. Access it and disable it so you don’t have to deal with it.
