Chrysler Delays EV Launch Until 2026

Chrysler’s long-anticipated electric crossover has officially been placed on hold, a setback that has disappointed many EV enthusiasts.

An internal email from Stellantis, first reported by MoparInsiders, revealed that the program would be paused “until further notice”, pushing back plans for the vehicle’s launch initially scheduled for later this year.

The electric crossover was expected to be a pivotal element in Chrysler’s strategy to achieve an all-electric lineup by 2028. However, despite its ambitious goals, the brand has yet to release any EVs.

Chrysler’s Electric Crossover Program Put on Hold Amidst Disappointment

Chrysler CEO Chris Feuell recently stated at the 2023 Reuters Events Automotive USA Conference that the first EV would now debut in 2026, a shift that raises concerns about the company’s future in the competitive electric vehicle market.

Originally designed as an evolution of the Airflow concept unveiled in 2022, the crossover was set to use the STLA Large platform, shared with vehicles like the new Jeep Wagoneer S and the Dodge Charger Daytona EV. However, that plan is now on hold as the company explores new directions for the vehicle’s design and functionalities.

This development is part of a troubling trend for Stellantis, which has faced a 15% drop in US sales over the last year, with significant declines noted across brands like Dodge and Jeep. The company’s strategy of moving upscale may further alienate its customer base, which largely consists of budget-conscious buyers.

Speculation about Stellantis’ stability has heightened, particularly following remarks from former CEO Carlos Tavares, who indicated that unprofitable brands could face elimination. Despite this uncertainty, Feuell has reassured stakeholders that Chrysler is here to stay, insisting that “the brand is not on the table for elimination.”
