After 25 years of silence, the iconic video game Ecco The Dolphin is ready for a triumphant return. The game’s creator, Ed Annunziata, has confirmed that the original development team has reunited to work on three new projects related to this iconic franchise. Among them are two remasters of the original titles and a new adventure that promises to incorporate contemporary mechanics.
A dolphin we didn’t expect to see return
The remasterings include Ecco The Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides Of Time, two titles that marked the childhood of many players on the Sega Mega Drive consoles in 1992 and 1994, respectively. These remasterings will aim to update the visual and gameplay experience, allowing both new players and veterans to rediscover Ecco’s underwater world with a modern touch.
The new adventure is being developed with “contemporary gaming sensibilities and GPU,” although no additional details about its plot or features have been shared yet. This modern approach suggests that the developers are looking to attract a broader audience, including those who did not grow up with the franchise.
A key indicator of this return is a countdown clock on Ecco’s official website, which indicates that it will run out in 355 days, specifically on April 26, 2026, at midnight ET. This has generated growing anticipation among fans, who are eager to see how this classic saga will be renewed.
Ecco fans have reasons to celebrate this revival, especially considering that the last release of the franchise, Defender Of The Future, took place in August 2000 on Dreamcast. We will keep an eye out for more news as the date marked on the countdown approaches while Sega remains determined to rescue old franchises.
